We have been cleaning septic tanks for over a decade. We’re experts in both residential and commercial cleaning. There are some issues we don’t find surprising regarding septic backups or sewer drains. - Never Flush a “Flushable Wipe
No matter what the packaging may say, there is no flushable wipe. You should be extra careful about flushing baby wipes and makeup remover wipes with septic systems. If in doubt, we recommend throwing it out. If you aren’t sure if it will break down in your septic tank, don’t flush it. This also applies to feminine products. Some products are safe while others are not. It is important to read labels carefully. - Do Not Rinse Grease Down the Drain
Grease can cause havoc in your septic tank. It will turn the water and waste into sludge, and destroy the healthy bacteria that your tank needs to break down solids. Incorrectly handling cooking waste is one of the main causes of excessive grease in your tank. You can make bacon, drain the grease from Thanksgiving turkey, or just wash your greasy cooking pans. But don’t forget to dispose of any excess grease. Because of grease issues, the day after Thanksgiving is one that’s most busy for emergency septic services! - No Garbage Disposals
Your garbage disposal will be the enemy of a home with a septic system. A garbage disposal is not required to be installed in many new homes. This is because garbage disposals allow food and other debris to get into your septic tank. We recommend that you do not have a garbage disposal if you have a septic tank. It’s cheaper to buy extra garbage bags than replace your septic system.
