In good oak, these large vessels of the earlywood occupy from 6 to 10 p.c of the quantity of the log, while in inferior materials they may make up 25% or extra. The latewood of good oak is dark coloured and agency, and consists largely of thick-walled fibers which type one-half or extra of the wood. In inferior oak, this latewood is much lowered both in quantity and quality. Such variation may be very largely the outcome of rate of development.
